An Extraordinarily Rare Needlepoint Panel with a Bizarre Design
- Bizarre Tapestry
Lyon 1690 - 1705
100 x 206 cms
The ornamental needlepoint panel has its origins in the Bizarre designs of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
The vivid and dense composition with pomegranates, fins, horns and wreaths of flowers which are placed on a cream background is extraordinary
and has all the intensity and vivacity of the best of the "Bizarre" designs.
We are not aware of another needlepoint textile which has such a design, these designs are normally found in silk textiles.
Provenance: Chateau de la Guerrière à Couzon au Mont d'Or near Lyon

There are some examples in
Schloss Favorite in Rastatt-Förch in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. These examples of needlepoint embroideriesare similar, but are less "Bizarre" in design.
