Sculptor, painter, printmaker Ana Maria Pacheco was born in Brazil in 1943
Following degrees in both Art and Music, she taught and lectured for several years before coming to England on a British Council Scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art, London
Following two significant group exhibitions, at the ICA in 1980 (Women's Images of Men) and the Hayward Annual Drawing Show in 1982, her first important one person show took place at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, in 1983 Since 1983 she has exhibited widely. In 1996 Ana Maria Pacheco was invited to become the fourth Associate Artist at the National Gallery, London. She was both the first non-European and the first sculptor to take up this appointment (1997 - 2000).
The exhibition at the National Gallery focused on a major new multi-figure sculpture in polychromed wood, Dark Night of the Soul, and a series of paintings. This exhibition then toured to Wolverhampton Art Gallery; Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea; The Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester and the Mappin Art Gallery Sheffield. The Dark Night of the Soul was exhibited at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and in January 2002 at Salander-O'Reilly Galleries, New York. This was Ana Maria Pacheco's inaugural exhibition of sculpture at the New York gallery and was followed by a second exhibition in February 2003, which focused on a new multi-figure sculpture made for the gallery space: Land of No Return. This work was the focus of a major exhibition at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, which was also the launch venue for Prints, a National Touring Exhibition organised by the Hayward Gallery for Arts Council, England. Since 1973 she has lived and worked in England.
