Anonymous Murshidabad Artist

India

  • Opaque watercolour heightened with gold on paper, Circa 1760
    Folio 24 x  16.5 cms
    Image 20.6 x 13 cms

A yogini is seated in a meditative trance outside her hut, her rosary held loosely in her fingers & her posture maintained by a yogapatta or band passing over her knees & secured at her waist. An emaciated dog, almost always pictured in the company of yogis and siddhas as a reference to the cremation grounds which they frequent, keeps her company.
In keeping with the Murshidabad convention, the figure is centrally placed in the middle ground and is skillfully juxtaposed with the naturalistic background comprising green foliage that melds into the blue hills behind, which in turn melt into the sky.
