The painting is a portrait of an officer, William Henry Knight of the 48th
Regiment of foot. He had a distinguished military career having taken part
in the Crimean campaign, 1855 and was present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol.
Major General Knight also held the medal with clasp and has a Turkish medal,
of the 5th class of the Medjidie.
We believe this portrait was painted in 1858 while Knight was with his regiment
in Northern India.
